Empire Theatre Toowoomba

Empire Theatre Toowoomba — Queensland’s regional heritage venue

Empire Theatre sits on Neil Street in central Toowoomba, on the Darling Downs in regional Queensland, ninety minutes’ drive west of Brisbane via the Toowoomba Range. The theatre opened in 1911 and underwent major heritage-conservation refurbishment in the 1990s that restored the original Edwardian interior and modernised the back-of-house. It is the principal regional Queensland touring venue for Bell Shakespeare‘s national tour, Musica Viva Australia‘s Queensland regional programme, and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra‘s regional touring concerts.

The room

1,567 seats across stalls and dress circle. The acoustic profile and the heritage Edwardian interior produce one of the best preserved regional Australian theatre experiences. The room handles spoken-word performance, chamber music and the small-orchestra repertoire equally well.

Getting there and pairing

Drive from Brisbane (90 min via the Warrego Highway) or fly to Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport (15 min from the CBD) for the longer interstate trip. Pair the production with the Carnival of Flowers in late September each year (Queensland’s largest spring flower festival, centred on Toowoomba’s parks and gardens), or with the Darling Downs wine and food region. Toowoomba accommodation in the CBD is straightforward and reasonably priced; the Highfields and Picnic Point precincts are the standard pre-show pairing destinations.
