Queensland Theatre
Queensland Theatre — Brisbane’s resident state theatre
Queensland Theatre is the principal Queensland-based theatre company and the resident state theatre at QPAC’s Playhouse. The company was founded in 1969 (originally as the Queensland Theatre Company), is based at the Bille Brown Theatre on Montague Road, South Brisbane (the company’s purpose-built rehearsal and performance complex, opened in 2018), and produces a typical year of seven mainstage productions. The artistic director since 2024 is Lee Lewis, succeeding Sam Strong.
The company’s programming line balances contemporary Australian playwriting (with strong commitment to Queensland-based playwrights and culturally diverse programming), the canonical Australian repertoire (David Williamson, Hannie Rayson, Andrew Bovell), the international work that suits the QPAC Playhouse and Bille Brown rooms (the recent Tracy Letts, Annie Baker and Lucy Kirkwood Australian premieres), and substantial commitment to First Nations playwriting and dramaturgy.
