Circa

Circa — Brisbane’s contemporary circus ensemble

Circa is Australia’s principal contemporary circus company and one of the most internationally toured Australian arts organisations of any discipline. Founded in 2004 in Brisbane, the company runs a tight ensemble of approximately fifteen circus performers and produces a typical year of one or two new full-length contemporary circus works plus extensive national and international touring. The artistic director since the company’s founding is Yaron Lifschitz, whose choreographic and directorial style has produced a contemporary circus identity that pairs technical virtuosity with substantial dramaturgy.

The company’s signature productions — Humans, Sacred Geometry, Beyond, Carmen, the recent Wolfgang’s Magical Musical Circus — have toured to over forty countries, with the company’s international touring schedule the most extensive of any Australian performing arts organisation. The combination of contemporary circus, contemporary classical music collaboration (with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Brandenburg in recent productions) and visual theatre design produces a distinctive cross-art-form identity.

Home venue

  • Brisbane Powerhouse — New Farm. The company’s principal Brisbane home for new productions.
  • QPAC — Cremorne Theatre and Lyric Theatre — used for the larger-scale productions and the touring runs.
  • Circa is the resident circus company for the Brisbane Festival and a regular international festival presence.
